Linden Ridge Top program enlists Haygain Steamed Hay's help in top-level horse care.Ainsley Vince’s awareness of the winter temperatures in her Ontario homebase usually comesfrom her phone’s weather app, followed from the cozy climes ofWellington, Florida. For the first time in nearly 25 years, the hunter/jumper professional stayed home at Linden Ridge in Burlingtonthis winter. Owned by Ainsley and her sisterCourtney, the A-circuit oriented training program usually takes a large contingent of clients to the Florida hunter/jumper circuit. Mainly due to COVID travel restrictions, Ainsley stayed home this year. "It's a completely new experience," she says of keeping horses and clients happy during her hometown's cold winters. One upside is experiencing Haygain Steamed Hay warming up the barn with tantalizing scents first thing on frosty mornings. "It smells amazing," she enthuses. The Vinces saw Haygain High Temperature Steamed Hay as a good fit for their 22-horse program because it can help horses with a range of conditions. Tending to each horse's individual needs is the modus operandi at Linden Ridge, and Haygain has been a big help. Allergies, chronic coughing and weight management are the primary issues for which Steamed Hay has been called into service.Allergies in horses can be as random and mysterious as they are in humans. One horse, for example, had not had any issues in her four years at Linden Ridge, then recently broke out in hives, Ainsley shares. The culprit was identified as an ingredient in the grain the mare had regularly eaten throughout that time and suddenly reacted to. Knowing that an allergic reaction to one thing can heighten sensitivity to others, Ainsley had the mare switched to adifferent grain and to Haygain Steamed Hay. The patented Haygain steaming process is the only method proven to substantially reduce respirable irritants commonly found even in hay of good nutritional content. Reducing the respirable irritants reduces the risk of inflammatory responses which are sometimes made worse by a pre-existing allergic response.

Allergies in horses can be as random and mysterious as they are in humans. One horse, for example, had not had any issues in her four years at Linden Ridge, then recently broke out in hives, Ainsley shares. The culprit was identified as an ingredient in the grain the mare had regularly eaten throughout that time and suddenly reacted to.

Knowing that an allergic reaction to one thing can heighten sensitivity to others, Ainsley had the mare switched to a different grain and to Haygain Steamed Hay. The patented Haygain steaming process is the only method proven to substantially reduce respirable irritants commonly found even in hay of good nutritional content.

Reducing the respirable irritants reduces the risk of inflammatory responses which are sometimes made worse by a pre-existing allergic response.

Coughs Caught Early

A Haygain diet has helped other horses that coughed regularly when they began to exercise. Where an occasional cough in people is a normal way of clearing the throat, it's not normal in horses. It's often an early indicator of inflammation in the respiratory tract, which is the cause for all conditions on the Equine Asthma Spectrum. Many veterinarians would like to see the horse at that point, to assess and treat respiratory inflammation while in its earliest and most reversible point on the Spectrum. Ainsley's retired Grand Prix jumper, Darling, is another prioritized recipient of Hay Steamed Hay. "She's a big girl and an easy keeper and we have to monitor her weight very carefully." The Linden Ridge crew soaks Darling's hay to reduce the sugars in it, then steams it to ensure its hygienic qualitand improve its palatability. Horses' digestive function is well served by having forage in the digestive tract most of the day. The one-two punch of soaking then steaming Darling's forage facilitates that while helping her maintain a healthy weight.

Ainsley wishes Linden Ridge had its Haygain Hay Steamer a few years ago for a pony that struggled with frequent stomach upset. “Maintaining its weight was equally difficult, although on the opposite side of the spectrum,” she explains. “I am confident that if we’d had our Haygain then and been able to keep the pony’s stomach clear of digestive irritants and numerous bacteria, maintaining its plump-pony physique would have been much more easily achieved. ”Along with helping Linden Ridge's horses, Ainsley is especially appreciative of Haygain's ease of use for the horse care staff. “COVID has made it tougher to maintain good staff. This is vital at Linden Ridge, where providing top quality full-time service is key. I'm mostly out in the arena all day, but my staff tells me that Haygain Hay Steaming has been simple, straightforward and easy to do." Taking great care of horses is critical to Linden Ridge's success. "Horses are our clients' pets and part of their families," Ainsley concludes. "We are really fortunate to have a staff that treats all our clients' horses that way and Haygain helps us do that."
